NY Times Article on Never too young fo that First Pedicure

See here.

When I was six, I loved to play dress-up in my gold lame' Princess costume. I performed in a go-go outfit at my first grade talent show. In junior high I wore enough make-up to be seen a block away. It was fun to go out with my bffs to the mall and browse the make-up counters. Today, I'm a respectable 42 year old that wears a bit of foundation that wears off by the end of the workday and not much else. Haven't touched a bottle of perfume in years. I keep finding ways to shorten my hair prep time. And I have a fantastic career at an international corporation. I wish I had more time to take care of myself.

But! One of my favorite activities is spa day with my bff's. Getting a pedicure, massage and having lunch in a white robe while I'm pampered. Love it! If my daughter can experience the fun of hanging with friends and if that means it involves playing dress up and getting glitter on her--I'm okay with that. Today there are so many fun things for kids--temporary tattoos, stickers, etc. Fun ways to play around with your appearance. I pass by Libby Lu and wish there was one for 42 year olds! Who knows who she will be as an adult? The whole Disney Princess thing has been so over-marketed that this generation may end up rejecting all of this glam, glittery, vanity stuff. I mean seriously, I haven't worn gold lame' or a pair of go-go boots in years.

And guess what all you anti-Barbie folks? I played with Barbies too. My Barbies were superheroes and corporate executives. If you saw me now, you would know that I am not tied up in my body image.
